According to TripAdvisor, the fact that people are feeling the financial pinch has impacted on their willingness to tip while on vacation. It found that a third of British holidaymakers it polled have started to give smaller tips or have abandoned the practice completely.
It also found that 54 per cent of people are unsure what is expected of them when it comes to tipping in other countries. Meanwhile, 29 per cent of British travellers adopt a general approach to leaving money, handing over the same amount wherever they are eating and whichever country they are in.
It seems as though not everyone is happy with the tipping behaviour of UK consumers.
Almost one in six respondents (16 per cent) had endured a tipping-related incident in which a waiter confronted them about the amount they had left. Furthermore, eight per cent revealed that a bad tipping experience had ruined one of their vacations.
Also, 22 per cent noted that tipping on holiday made them feel nervous, while the same percentage were so concerned about it that the issue had put them off travelling to the US, where tipping is a big part of the culture.
According to TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw, it’s not surprising that holidaymakers are reluctant to tip much. She remarked: “It has been a challenging year for the British economy, and British tourists are spending very carefully. While the majority are still rewarding good service on holidays with tips, many Britons are giving smaller tips as cost-saving continues to be a priority.”
