London’s Stansted Airport has been bought by the owner of Manchester Airport for £1.5bn. Formerly owned by Heathrow Airport Holdings, Stansted had to be sold as a result of a ruling by the Competition Commission. The sale is not expected to have any immediate effects on the day to day running of either airport, and is due to be 100% completed later this month. Indeed, anyone turning up at the Stansted or Manchester airport car park will notice little difference to begin with. Heathrow Airport Holdings chief executive Colin Matthews said about the deal:
“Stansted Airport and its people have been part of our company for a long time. We wish the new owners every success and are confident the airport will continue to flourish. We will continue to focus on improving Heathrow, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton airports.”
Manchester Airport is the third busiest in the UK, and over 18.9 million passengers are believed to have used its terminals during 2011. There is no doubt that Stansted will benefit from the knowledge and expertise of the Manchester Airports Group which runs Manchester airport. Manchester is one of the most well known cities in the UK, and there are many different reasons why people fly in and out of the city. There is plenty of cheap airport parking on offer which makes it attractive to business people who work on an international basis. Indeed, the parking at Manchester airport is considered to be amongst some of the best airport cark parks in the country.
Manchester is home to one of the biggest football clubs in the world, and regularly welcomes fans through the airport who are going to watch their team compete against the famous Manchester United Football Club (MUFC). MUFC have a long history and have millions of fans all across the globe. The team has enjoyed unprecedented success in the past 20 years with their legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm. However, their neighbours Manchester City won the league title last year and are threatening MUFC’s position at the top of the English game. This season is proving to be as exciting as ever and there is no doubt that it will end with a close finish once again.
Many people living in the north of England fly out from Manchester to go on their holidays. With flights available to all over the world, there is a wealth of choice on offer when it comes to choosing where to go on vacation. Whilst Manchester has a bit of a reputation for rainy weather conditions, there can be no surprise that so many people seek a bit of sunshine relief on their holidays. However, Manchester has many attractions as a city. It has produced some of the most exciting and well known musicians and bands on the planet, and is well known for its unique brand of northern soul. Stansted airport should be in safe hands with the managers of Manchester airport taking over their business and operations.
